Scarborough - Vikings
By Craig Bone
The Vikings were on the road this week down to a very sunny East Yorkshire to visit Hull Ionians.
Brantingham Park has not been a great hunting ground in the past for Scarborough but the Vikings, bolstered by a few Danesman, were looking forward to changing this on a very sunny day.
Vikings kicked off looking into the glaring sun, both sets of forwards trying to find the upper hand. After 15 minutes the Vikings front row of Fish, Day, Peate and – laterally – Helms did what they have done all season – started turning the screw in the set-piece – winning ball at will, Ionians just didn’t have any answers.
After 25 minutes Rory Day, lurking in midfield, gets an interception from the half-way line and outsprints the home team defence – converted by Edmond. 7-0 to the Vikings. A further forward dominated try by James Emsley, converted by Edmond – 14-0. Just before the break Ionians score which was converted 14-7 at halftime.
Conlin and Rossol used all their experience to put the Vikings in try-scoring positions. Full length-of-the-field weaving run by by Man of Match Elliot Hutchinson. With Will Rennard on his shoulder the big 2nd Row went over under the posts – converted again 21-7
Vikings wanting more with the pack destroying their opponents scrum. A Captain Rossol jinking run then a deft little kick over the top, found the greyhound Tom Monsey score in the corner. No conversion 26-7.
More forward power created the chance for Josh Broadhead to drive over and score his first try for the Vikings this season – converted by Edmond 33-7. The last 5 minutes Ionians score a late try which ended the game 33-14
Elliott Hitchinson was man of the match with his fellow back row of Emsley and Wardell having good solid games.
Coach Bone was again smiling with the Vikings discipline and incredible work ethic.
Well deserved win adding to the Fantastic result at Silver Royd for the 1st team – wonderful day for Scarborough Rugby Club
