Scarborough - Vikings
By Craig Bone
Vikings were back playing a rejuvenated Hornsea team away
Vikings needed to get out of the blocks quicker than previous weeks and they did just that from an orchestrated pass from Phil Stewart to put Craig Fairbairn in – conversation missed. The Vikings were on-fire banging on the door of their hosts line. Another penalty allowed the Vikings to kick for touch, line out – which was as usual won by Rennard at the front – rolling maul ensued put the first team prop Fish in from a yard out – conversation missed. 10-0 to the Vikings.
Hornsea went down to 14 men for a red card offence.
This then galvanised Hornsea who had 10 minutes of phases of play then scored two tries of their own. Half time 10-10.
Second half with the wind and not looking into the sun, it was one-way traffic in terms of ball retention and set piece, against Hornsea’s good defence.
Injuries were taking their toll for the Vikings with a lot of players going down, to the extent that “coach Bone” looked to the touchline for inspiration to pull the lads through. Laura Welburn hadn’t brought her gum shield, so it was no. Kat the Physio, she had the wrong boots. Then from nowhere Craig Simon Bone, like a leaping salmon in a somewhat John West tin, yes came on to the wing. 3 great tries from Holloway, Hutchinson and Read with captain of the day, Alex Rowley, slotting over a conversion finishing 27-10 to the Vikings.
Great performance from the whole team. Rowley and Stewart were instrumental in setting the tempo we set out from the offset. Joint Men of the Match Will Rennard and Craig Fairbairn were both outstanding.
