A big crowd down to watch the Vikings first game of the season at Silver Royd against a very good BP side.
Game started with a great break from Connor Ward, and excellent support work from Finlay Dennis to score his first try of season converted by Captain Rowley – 7-0 to Vikings, BP putting some phases together score to give the score 7-7, then Ward again ghosted in to score – 12-7 Vikings. Vikings now getting the upper hand in set pieces against a very physical BP side. Pollock, Williams, Day really turning the screw, Hird and Rennard athleticism was magnificent with Hutchinson, Read controlling the tight game battles.
BP then score against the run of play to level the scores, 12-12 at half time. Vikings finishers where brought on to freshen the make-up of the team, which got us the penalty which Captain Rowley converted 15-12, then literally from the kick off an unforced error gifted BPs winger a try which was converted – 19-12 to BP. This gave BP a bit of a kick going forward , Vikings never gave in. Jordan Day now being put back on the pitch scored a steamroller of a try to give the Vikings the smallest of margins 20-19, BP banging on the door, but the young Vikings pack would not open it. Phil Stewart now able to rest after nearly 6 months of sleepless nights traumatised last time we played BP kicking the ball into Burniston to finish the game as a win for the Vikings.
Big shout outs to young colts Matty Ward, Zak Kirk and Alex Hird for outstanding maturity and great attitude Man of the Match Ryan Fowler was immense in all the back row positions he played in.
Back on the road next week against Beverley.
