Scarborough U14s versus Whitby U14s
This weekend saw Scarborough under U14s take on Whitby at home in a wet but exciting contest. From the first whistle it was clear that Whitby were planning on exploiting Scarborough’s wide defence. The kick off was caught just outside the away 22 metre line and two neat passes saw it in the hands of the Whitby fullback who had ample pace to scamper around the would be defence of the home side, 5-0 Whitby. From the resulting restart both sides looked like creating opportunities but the last pass was missing from both sides with the ball becoming more and more slippery. Whitby were awarded a scrum thirty metres from the home line and after the ball shot out the back it was gathered by the away fly half who found space for the flying fullback to scamper in under the posts for his second. The conversion was added by the fly half to bring the score to 12-0. The following fifteen minutes was played about the half way line with a string of fumbles from both sides resulting in a large number of scrumages. From one of these scrumage the Whitby forwards managed to make considerable ground through a series of pick and drives which left the Scarborough defence scrambling and eventually saw the Whitby prop crash over, 17-0. On the stroke of half time a fumble from the home side saw the Whitby fullback hack the ball over the try line as he completed his hat trick from 15 metres out, 22-0. The second half started much better for the home side with them fielding the kick off and running it back passed the visitors with interest. Some good continuity and forward play saw them create an overlap on the right and were if not for a handling error in the wet conditions, they would have surely had the perfect start. As it was, the rest of the half continued in much the same fashion for the home side with numerous opportunities missed only by the dropping of the crucial pass. One of these breaks however, resulted in a penalty which skipper Dan Brookman took quickly and crashed his way through the away pack to score a fantastic solo try, 22-0. Scarborough dominated the second half and were unlucky not to come away with more points. As it was the second half finished with a rare foray by Whitby into the home 22, which the visitors were able to convert into points scoring wide in the corner to bring about a final score of 27-5.
