7-Feb-10 SRUFC U13’s
Scarborough 5, York 20
Tries: J Marshall
What an absolutely fantastic defeat! (Honest, it was!)
Playing a physically much bigger pack and most of the game with 14 men, Scarborough put in probably their best performance of the season so far and were unlucky to go down in a tight defeat.
Scarborough’s forwards rucked like they had never rucked before, turning ball over and winning good quality clean ball of their own;
In the scrum, a seven man Scarborough pack dominated winning most of their own ball, a fair proportion of York’s and almost all the push – special mention to one of Scarborough’s two men of the match, Hooker Aaron Wilson;
In the backs, Scarborough Half Backs Connor Holdsworth and second man of the match Sam Dickinson, ably assisted by the back row of James Wingrove, Conor Ward and Owen Renwick, closed down York’s backs completely, allowing them to make almost no contribution in the entire game;
By contrast, when the ball arrived in the Scarborough backs, Sam and Connor provided superb service to the centres and back three with strong runs from Joe Marshall and Callum Marshall resulting in one try and very nearly in two others.
In the end, it was only Scarborough’s inability to stop the York rolling maul, based on their size advantage, which was the difference between the sides, all York’s tries coming from their forwards rolling over from short range. Something that we will have an answer for next time.
