Sometimes, a loss is something that you’re going to learn more from than any win.
Playing a four quarter game to allow Ripon to rotate their 23 player squad, Scarborough got off to a terrible start falling 17 points behind before anybody’s Frosties seemed to have kicked in. Once awake, both sides settled down to an exceptionally good game with Scarborough shutting out Ripon in the second quarter but unable to turn any of their own attacks into points. The third quarter saw a spell of the jitters for Scarborough with a loss of attacking confidence leading to giving Ripon the ball in poor field position on several occasions and ultimately a further 19 points. But the fourth quarter saw a revival limiting Ripon to 5 points and scoring 5 points of their own with a determined run from Joe Marshall at a penalty at the Ripon 22.
In the end, the score line was not a fair reflection of the game with some real positives for Scarborough in amongst it: James Marsden in the forwards with a tremendous work rate and dominance at the line out; The forwards in general with effective counter-rucking; Chris North, Aaron Wilson and Joe Marshall with tremendous defensive performances particularly against Ripon’s kicking game and Conor Ward with another great game in support of the run. There were no poor performances and very little difference in ability, strength or fitness between the teams – the difference was simply that Ripon did it all quicker.
Man of the match was awarded by the Ripon Coaches to Joe Marshall with the Scarborough Coaches adding a second award to James Marsden.
We know the bench mark now – let’s see what we can achieve when we meet them again later in the season.
